Take Into Account All the Costs of Dating Online

By Jayde Johannsen

With millions of people dating online, finding a potential mate has never been easier. The Internet and online dating sites give you direct access to a treasure trove of partners. Back in the olden days (think'95), your options were generally limited to people you were in contact with on a daily basis: classmates from high school or college, a coworker in the next cubicle, or maybe someone you kept an eye on in the local coffee shop. Today, however, for just a small charge every month, you can communicate with people all over the world.

These dating services vary in price. Many don't cost a thing, or have a free month long period for you to try the site and figure out whether it's worth it for you. In most cases, unpaid sites don't have the same kind of functionality in comparison with paid sites. For example, you shouldn't expect to be able to search through interests or hobbies. More likely, you'll have to sift through hundreds of profiles sorted only by location, age, and sex. That can add a lot of time to your hunt.

Sites that require a monthly payment, however, have powerful search engines that allow you to quickly find exactly the kind of mate you're interested in. Do you love chess? Plug that into the field, and you'll find someone with a similar passion. Of course, if you live in a small town with hardly any people interested in online dating, this isn't a big deal. You can simply sort through the profiles on a case by case basis, looking for a mate. But if you're searching in New York City or Paris, with millions of potential suitors, it can be quite another story.

One other thing that many people don't realize: you'll be heading out on many more dates, and that means a lot more checks to pick up! The increased cost is a prime reason to take your time getting to know someone before meeting them for dinner or drinks. Don't rush anything along; there's plenty of time to get to know someone before taking it to the next level.

Websites that are targeted at specific races or religions are usually more expensive as well, simply for economic reasons. Dating services that target the broad public have a ton of competition; you could likely rattle off a few names from the top of your head. In contrast, sites aimed at specific demographics can be more selective, because they own a lion's share of the market. For the consumer, this likely means a higher cost per month.

One last thing to keep in mind: it's very easy to sign up with your credit card, and then completely forget about it! A year later, you check your card statement, and realize you've been paying for it the whole time. That could mean a whole lot of wasted money.

Online dating sites provide great value, but you have to make sure you're getting your money's worth. Take the proper time to research a site before signing up and giving your credit card number and you'll be on the road to meeting a mate. - 31991
